We have connected numerous candidates with global brands in the luxury, fashion and beauty sector. In this new content segment, we chat with successful candidates so you can get a sneak peek into the luxury retail world.

In this month’s edition of “What’s it like working as?” we speak to Edwin Goh. He’s currently working as a Boutique Supervisor at a Swiss luxury watch brand. We reached out to Edwin for a career growth opportunity and we successfully helped him with his next move with one of our luxury watch clients

Edwin began his journey in the luxury retail industry as a Sales Consultant. During his 5 years job stint at Duty Free Singapore, Edwin fronted multiple renowned watch brands and managed to attain the position of a senior Sales Consultant.

Question 1: Tell us a little about yourself!

Hi everyone, this is Edwin and I am currently working as Boutique Supervisor in a Swiss luxury watch brand in Marina Bay Sands. Previously, I was at a retail chain for 5 years as a Sales Consultant to watch & jewellery brands such as Piaget and Jaeger-LeCoultre. Since contacting Luxury Careers and securing the job, I have been here for the past six months.

Question 2: Share with us what goes on a typical day at work. What do you do?

As a Boutique Supervisor, I am the face of the boutique. I have to ensure it remains in tip-top condition at all times, be it the Visual Merchandise (VM) displays or the creations’ condition.

My role also requires me to support the Boutique Manager, such as planning out the roster for the boutique. I also work closely with my Sales Associates by supporting them whenever they encounter difficulties. One example that occurs on a more regular basis is that some of my junior Sales Associates might face difficulties answering certain questions. I am there to help.

Question 3: What do you like about the luxury retail industry? Some perks on being in the industry?

I think this job has been the gateway to building relationships with many high net worth individuals. Due to the prices of the creations, the brand attracts a certain level of clientele. I am personally passionate about watches; one perk would definitely be that I am able to see the creations first hand! The workplace environment is also something different from other types of job.

Question 4: What is the most fulfilling thing about this job and what is your greatest takeaway from being in the luxury retail industry?

What attracted me to work in luxury retail line is the things I’m able to learn through challenges along the road. Apart from that, this job pays well, I won’t deny that.

Being in luxury retail requires teamwork to achieve our objective. In my current position, it is very fulfilling when my team and I are able to overcome challenging targets and achieve milestones together. I have always stuck by this statement. “Alone we are so little, but together we can achieve beyond.”

However, remuneration is not the only factor that kept me going all these years. I feel if you work only for money, you will lose interest fast. The other reason why I love this role is because of the human interaction. It is really fulfilling when you’re able to develop a relationship with a walk-in customer and progress that individual to your client and eventually your friend.

Question 5: Any tips for someone who wants to join the luxury retail industry?

I’ve reiterated this statement my fellow colleagues and friends. That we are sales consultant and not a salesman. I strongly feel that we are selling an experience instead of products. I’d encourage them to look at their jobs as a career.

To excel in this industry, be mentally prepared to make sacrifices. The brand’s busy period might clash with your personal plans. I’ve always encouraged my team to take it more positively and see it as an opportunity to earn more!

We hope the interview is able to shed some light on the life of a Boutique Supervisor. Edwin is one of the many candidates who experienced the service and expertise of Luxury Careers to help him with his next move in his Career.
