As the first impression of yourself, your CV should represent the best of you, be up-to-date, clear and succinct. Let recruiters see your merits and stand out among the many other candidates vying for the position.<\/p>\n

Today, it\u2019s back to basics with five things that will make or break your CV.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Don’t post ancient history<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s face it. Nobody cares which primary school you came from or how many awards you clinched as a child. For most jobs, even your secondary school and army work experiences are irrelevant.<\/p>\n

As a rule of thumb, if you are in the job market for more than five years, remove information about the co-curricular activities and university camps you were involved in. Even old part time jobs that are irrelevant to your industry should be removed. At this stage of your career, hiring staff and potential employers are mainly interested in the work you have done that is related to the role you\u2019re applying for.<\/p>\n

The bottom line is to include what is relevant for the industry you are applying a job in. A tip is that you can actually include F&B experience if you are applying for a sales role, as the skill sets required do overlap.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Never-ending stories<\/p>\n

Some candidates copy their entire job description on to their CV. This highlights to recruiters and hiring managers that you are lazy. Take the time and effort to review your experience and learning points after every job. Summarise your experience and reword it succinctly so hiring managers can better understand what you have learnt from your past job(s).<\/p>\n

If you have worked for around six years and were jumpy at the start of your career path, you might want to lump your job experience together so your CV looks more coherent.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Not having an achievement section<\/p>\n

Sharing your achievements is key in helping you score brownie points.<\/p>\n

Different roles have different achievements. For sales, achievements can include hitting specific sales targets or figures. For marketers, you can talk about successful marketing campaign projects \u2013 how the planning was done, the execution, the response etc. Brand managers can mention the brands under your belt and how you have helped these brands scale greater heights. Store designers can talk about the successful launch of a new shop front and how it was received.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Microsoft Office is not a real skill<\/p>\n

Do not list Microsoft Office as a skill. As a software that we used even in primary education, everybody is expected to know how to use Microsoft Office. If it doesn\u2019t set you apart from other candidates, don\u2019t include it in your CV.<\/p>\n

However, if you have knowledge of data analytics software, programming software or creative software such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, do list them as some jobs may see these skillsets as a bonus.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>Bad English ruins appointment<\/p>\n

For the last tip, spell check is your best friend. You could even install Grammarly as an additional precaution. Check, check and check again. One spelling or grammatical error could break your CV \u2013 it could be interpreted as carelessness or nonchalance on your part.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, get a friend or family member to read through your CV. A set of fresh eyes can better identify any errors you might have overlooked.<\/p>\n

To reiterate, having a CV that stands out is essential in getting your foot in the door. Keep reviewing and updating your CV to make it most representative of who you are.<\/p>\n
